Salad Anyone?

October 1, 2019

Each day during morning break at Walton Middle School, Ms. Kathy Russ' eighth grade students operate their own mini-restaurant.  The eighth graders take salad orders from their peers and then prepare them to order.  The students harvest the salad greens daily from the WMS ag program's hydroponic towers housed in Ms. Russ' classroom.  They thoroughly wash their hands and glove up to fulfill the orders they receive.  Not only do students prepare and enjoy healthy salads, but they also learn waitressing and kitchen skills that will serve them well later in life.  At WMS, learning can be both relevant and delicious.  Submitted by Kristen Nelson

West DeFuniak welcomed a huge number of dads on the morning September 25th for Donuts with Dads.  Donuts with Dad is a special event that brings families into the classroom and gets them involved at school. This year, the dads visited the classrooms with their students, and participated in a wide variety of classroom activities such as reading an Accelerated Reader Book and S.T.E.M Projects.   It was great to see so many dads today! WDE would like to thank our local Kiwanis Club, law enforcement, and Walton County Fire Rescue for serving as surrogate dads.

Nearly 300 “Dads” were on hand yesterday to help build boats, design airplanes, create towers, and strategize to sink ships, among other fun activities.  It was hard to tell who had more fun – the children or the adults!

Eighth grade advanced science students at FMS participated in a recent NASA Mission where they selected locations on Earth for the Space Station to photograph. The students had to interact with a NASA's model to find locations globally within 35 miles of the space station orbits, review weather models to find cloud free days, and then submit image requests directly to the space station. What a way to learn about models and how we use them! Submitted by Chelsea Ellison

Dads + S.T.E.M. = Fun Learning!

September 24, 2019

Mossy Head School dads and dad representatives came out for "Take your Dad's to School" Day. Dads joined their children in super fun and challenging S.T.E.M. activities in their classes. From making their own bouncy balls, to stacking cups without using their hands, to building the tallest, strongest tower, students, teachers, and dads had a great time learning together!
