WDE Kindergarten Science STEM Project!

Liam Lewis and Paislee Hannah from Mrs. Donna Timmons’ Kindergarten Class at West DeFuniak Elementary enjoyed working together on a STEM project to encourage building and balancing. Students were asked to discover ways to make a “balance”. The students had one cup, one popsicle stick and one box of candy to use to make their “balances”. Submitted by Jessica Dawkins

WCSD Odyssey of the Mind Teams Represent!!

Walton County School District was well represented at the Emerald Coast Odyssey of the Mind Tournament on February 23 at Shoal River Middle School and Riverside Elementary School in Crestview, Florida. All of our teams did an incredible job!
Odyssey of the Mind Results:
Freeport Elementary School - 2nd Place in "Hide in Plain Sight" Division I
Bay Elementary School - Team Tokens Award for Creativity Fair, and 5th Place
Van R. Butler Elementary School - 2nd Place in "Structure Toss" Division I
Freeport Middle School Team A - 3rd Place in "Hide in Plain Sight" Division I
Freeport Middle School Team B - 3rd Place in "Opposites Distract" Division II
Mossy Head School - 1st Place in "Hide in Plain Sight" Division I
Walton High School - Outstanding OMER to team member, Luke, and 4th Place in Leonardo's Workshop Division III
Congratulations to Mossy Head School and Walton High School teams for making it to State! The State Odyssey of the Mind Tournament will take place on Saturday, April 6, 2019 at the University of Central Florida.
Mossy Head students that competed were Mikylee Coppens, Charlie McClung, Foster Stephenson and Annalise Higgins. The team was coached by Meredith Ness and Hannah Lovelady.
Walton High School Odyssey of the Mind Team
Odyssey of the Mind is an international educational program that provides creative problem-solving opportunities for students from kindergarten through college. Team members apply their creativity to solve problems that range from building mechanical devices to presenting their own interpretation of literary classics. They then bring their solutions to competition on the local, state, and World level. Thousands of teams from throughout the U.S. and from about 25 other countries participate in the program.

DEAR Day at WDE

WDE recently celebrated DEAR Day. DEAR stands for “Drop Everything and Read.” It is a time to celebrate student literacy and encourages students and adults to make reading a priority in their lives. This month, first grade students continued the spirit of DEAR Day and made daily reading an important part of their regular schedule. To add to this excitement, students have seen their hard work pay off by finally reaching their AR goal of 30 points and receiving their AR shirt! First graders are excited to continue on with a heart for reading, and look forward to seeing how they can grow throughout the rest of the year! submitted by Jessica Dawkins

WDE 4th and 5th Graders Visit Water Ventures

4th and 5th grade students at WDE got to experience what it is like to be in an aquifer. They visited the Water Ventures trailer with guides Carly Todd and Julianne Werts. Students learned about Florida’s 900 springs, Florida’s ecosystems, all about the water cycle as well as experiencing hands on activities. Students also learned about water conservation and how they can do their part to help save the Earth’s water supply and protect Florida’s natural resources. Submitted by Jessica Dawkins
MSE Fifth Graders Learn About Sea Turtles!

The Friends of South Walton Sea Turtles is an all-volunteer organization dedicated to promoting sea turtle conservation through awareness and education for the residents and more than 3 million visitors to Walton County. Today, they shared information about sea turtle conservation with MSE fifth graders. The students learned about the different types of sea turtles, their life cycle, and how we can help protect them. In March, the students will attend a field trip where they will simulate the life of sea turtles at one of Walton County’s beautiful beaches. MSE Holds FSA Parent Information Meetings

MSE 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade parents attended FSA Parent Information Meetings on February 25th and 26th. Guidance Counselor, Lisa Jones, and grade level teachers provided information that enables parents to help their children feel more confident and prepared for the upcoming state assessments.
