WMS Celebrates Literacy Week

Walton Middle School students had a blast celebrating literacy week January 23-27.  The themes for the week were as follows:  Monday--Hats off to Literacy (hat day); Tuesday--Hunting for a Good Book (camo day); Wednesday--Reading Takes You Back to the Future (favorite decade attire day); Thursday--We've Got Spirit (grade level color day); Friday--Team up with a Good Book (team attire day).  Students and faculty enjoyed showing their support for reading with a week of crazy and fun styles.  Submitted by Kristen Rhodes.

MSE 4th Graders Study Line Plots with Marshmallow Math

Students in Mrs. Anderson's 4th grade class studied line plots using marshmallow math. Students tossed their marshmallows on a number line while one classmate recorded the distance each marshmallow traveled. Students then worked together to create line plots using the data. MSE 5th Graders Presented Their First Genius Hour Projects

5th grade students at Maude Saunders Elementary presented their first Genius Hour projects. These students are provided time each day to research a topic they are passionate about. Students then create a presentation of their choice to present to their peers. Brooke Oxley created a volcano and demonstrated how volcanoes erupt. Submitted by Brianna Leavins.

"Doc Holliday" visits Maude Saunders and Paxton Schools

Dr. Richard Thomas, D.D.S., presented a character re-enactment of the famous Wild West dentist/law-man “Doc” Holliday at Maude Saunders Elementary school and Paxton School.  The visit was sponsored by the Florida Chautauqua Association as part of their Winter Assembly educational activities.  Dr. Thomas brought with him several original artifacts from the life of James Henry “Doc” Holliday, to include period dental tools, and Holliday’s actual foot-powered pedal drill.  He also had with him Holliday's appointment "book," an ivory fan with one blade per day of the week on which appointments were penciled in. The book includes traces of Holliday's handwriting. Submitted by Keitha Bledsoe.

Captain Meriwether Lewis Visits West DeFuniak Elementary School!

Mr. Moni Boling presented a character re-enactment of the famous explorer, Captain Meriwether Lewis, at West DeFuniak Elementary school.  Mr. Boling brought with him a several replica artifacts of the period, to include a non-firing flint-lock long rifle and an assortment of medical supplies.    Mr. Boling took the students through an interactive adventure of the Lewis and Clark Expedition with the Corps of Discovery.  Students assumed the roles of different members of the expedition and learned about the trials and hardships during the journey.  Mr. Boling’s visit was sponsored by the Florida Chautauqua Association as part of their Winter Assembly educational activities.  Submitted by Keitha Bledsoe.

Superintendent Russell Hughes Honors 2016-2017 District Offices TOY and ESPOY Winners

January 26, 2017

Superintendent Hughes gave special recognition to the Teacher of the Year and the Educational Support Professional selected by the District Offices.  Megan Dailey, a Board Certified Behavior Analyst with the district, received the Teacher of the Year award.  Sue Brack, with 27 years as a bookkeeper in the district, received the Educational Support Professional of the Year award.
