October 21, 2016

October has been a lots of fun in Kindergarten. Students enjoyed investigating and comparing length during a STEM activity. Students were tasked with constructing the tallest tower they could using candy pumpkins, candy corn, and play doh. Imagination and high order thinking skills came in handy with this challenging project. Submitted by Jessica Dawkins.

Mrs. Garrett’s 5th grade class worked in groups and used background knowledge to assemble the bones of a new dinosaur species. The students then text coded the article “Archaeopteryx” for bird and dinosaur characteristics. Submitted by Jessica Dawkins.

Mrs. McLaney’s fourth grade class at WDE is studying hurricanes and how they affect people. Students have learned about the dangerous effects of hurricanes. In this lesson, students made a hurricane in a bowl by using water and food coloring. Students were able to see the eye of the storm and how the hurricane can stretch over an area. Second grade students at WDE enjoyed working with interactive number lines during math this week. The number line is an important tool for helping children develop greater flexibility in mental arithmetic as they actively construct mathematical meaning, number sense, and understandings of number relationships. Freeport Middle School’s 8th grade AVID class with Mrs. Peloquin, attended the Freeport City Council meeting on October 11. As an extension from the visit, the AVID class created the “AVID Government Liaison Council (AGLC).” The AGLC will attend future meetings, bring information on current topics to the school student council, and return the verdict from a student survey to the next meeting. Police Officers, Nurses, and Firefighters! Oh my! Our kindergartners attended several special presentations this past week to discover helpers in our community. Each of our community helpers shared about their jobs and the special tools they use to perform their jobs. We are blessed to have the Walton County Fire Rescue, the Walton County Health Department and our very own Deputy Messenger visit kindergarten. Submitted by Elizabeth Gaither.
