SWHS Track & Field Team Compete in Orlando

Twenty-two members of the South Walton High School Track and Field Team traveled to Orlando over spring break for training, excursions and to participate in the Disney High School Track & Field Showcase at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex. Bringing home medals were Maddie Fulmer (1st in the 3200 and 6th in the 400), Ally Woodard (5th in the 1600 and 6th in the 3200), Haley Anderson (1st in pole vault), Ryan Short (2nd in pole vault), Micah Ryan (5th in 800), Amy Broadt (7th in 100 m hurdles), and Christian Friis (6th in discus).

WMS AVID Students Take a Tour

On Thursday, February 26, 2015, Walton Middle School (WMS) 6th-, 7th-, and 8th-grade AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) students experienced a special fieldtrip to Gulf Coast State College, located in Panama City, Florida. 

The students were given a special tour of the campus. During this tour, students were able to do some hands-on activities, like building electronic snap circuit boards, followed by a demonstration on how people can hack someone’s Gmail account. They learned how green-screens are used in media production. 

The students also toured the Architecture Department, Health Sciences Department and Technology Department.  This tour was designed to give these students a glimpse of possible future education choices they might have and what is expected of students in each field of study. 

Each of the students was given a goodie-bag filled with brochures, pens, and magnets from the college. Following the tour, the students were treated to CiCi’s Pizza for lunch. Special thanks to the teachers who accompanied the students on this fieldtrip - Ms. Amelia Collins, Ms. Emily Kent, Mr. Jared Smallwood, Mr. Brandon Crumbley, and Mr. Jeremy Deal.

WMS Achieve 3000 Successes

WMS Achieve 3000

 Walton Middle School (WMS) has a national scholastic winner. WMS participates in a nationwide program called Achieve 3000.  Students at WMS compete at the school level, state level and national level.  Students are encouraged to continue to work on the program at home if they have Internet access.  The competition consists of a class score, as well as individual scores.  Points are earned by completion with 75% or higher on the first try.  The classes have two competitions a year, one in the fall and one in the spring.  The 2014 fall competition was won by one of Mrs. Amy Bennett’s classes. 

During the 2015 Spring Competition WMS had some students who won not only at the school level, but at the state and national level.  This means these students scored high on each program and completed the most, too. Trevon Randolph, 6th grade, won the state earning the most points for the day on February 25, 2015. Another 6th grader, Kaymon Miller, also won for the state earning the most points for the day on February 26, 2015.  Special congratulations to these young men.

Elrod Vo is a very ambitious and motivated 6th grader.  For the week of February 23-27, 2015, Elrod had the most points for the entire week.  Next he had the most points in the state on March 3, 2015, and then on March 5, 2015, Elrod won the most points in the entire nation.

Special congratulations to all these students for their hard work and dedication.  Congratulations to Mrs. Bennett for her help and encouragement.

Silver Sands Premium Outlets Check Presentation

Ms. Katie Johnson, representative from Silver Sands Premium Outlets, presented a check for $11,000.00 to the Walton County School Board during their regularly scheduled meeting on March 17, 2015.  Accepting the check on behalf of the school district is Phil Tisa, Athletic Director of South Walton High School.

The Howard Group and Silver Sands Premium Outlets partnered with the Walton County School District in 2015 to ensure students are exposed to high-quality fine arts instruction, and for the provision of medical industry-standard instruction to high school students enrolled in the Allied Health Academy of South Walton High School. 

Upcoming Paint'n in the Rays Fun Run. Everyone is Invited to Join!

Emerald Coast Middle School Presents The 3rd Annual Paint’n the Rays Fun Run Friday, April 10 2015 1:30-3:00pm

 

What is a “paint’n run”? Runners will begin the race “clean” and throughout the course runners are coated with powder paint creating a work of art in motion! The 2015 Fun Run will be held during school hours, we invite all ECMS students and families to participate in this fun and fitness promoting event. We will have music, refreshments & Paint’n the Rays SWAG.  All paint is cornstarch based and non-toxic!

 

Who Benefits? Paint’n the Rays Fun Run is a community charity event with all proceeds to benefit Emerald Coast Middle School technology programs.

 

Who Can Run? We invite all students at ECMS to participate. Parents please contribute a $20 donation if you join your student.

Awards:                     Students who bring in a $10 donation by April 10, 2015 will receive a free dress day. Students are encouraged to seek additional pledges from family, neighbors and local businesses.

Paint’n the Rays Registration and Permission Form

Please complete one form per participant, student participation in this event requires a Parent/Guardian Signature whether or not pledges are collected. Please sign below and return by Wednesday, April 1, 2015. Safety is one of ECMS and PACTS greatest concerns. Accordingly, reasonable efforts are made to make school events safe.

However, participation in an event such as, or similar to the one mentioned above carries with it certain unavoidable, unpredictable, and inherent risks and dangers that no amount of care, caution, or instruction can eliminate. By signing below, the minor and parent/ legal guardian of the minor understands, acknowledges and agrees: 1.That the undersigned parties have read and understand all the information on the consent form. 2. ECMS History Team Makes History

March 17, 2015

History Team members participating in the Regional Finals of the National History Bee in Baton Rouge were:

  • Emma Sewell
  • Nick Sirmans
  • Cooper Weakly

Eric Plunk, Maddox Rhea, Nick Sirmans and Cooper Weakly advanced to the next round and will compete in the National Finals in Louisville, Kentucky in May.

Eric Plunk, Nick Sirmans and Cooper Weakly medaled by placing in the top ten.

And finally, ECMS’s own Nick Sirmans took first place overall in the regional tournament.
