Walton High School is excited to announce that we will be offering two streaming Northwest Florida State College (NWFSC) courses on our campus for the Fall 2023 semester and one in-person, face-to-face NWFSC class taught on our campus.

* Streaming NWFSC courses
Our NWFSC on-campus computer lab is equipped with brand new computer desktops, a large screen monitor, speakers, and in-room microphones for students to interact with the NWFSC professor for an optimal class experience. For the Fall 2023 semester, NWFSC will be offering Natural Disasters (ISC 1003) on Mondays and Wednesdays starting at 7:55 a.m. and Practical Applications of Math (MGF 1006) on Mondays and Wednesdays starting at 1:00 p.m. Both classes will be held in the WHS Media Center.

- Natural Disasters (ISC 1003) - This interdisciplinary course investigates natural catastrophic events, such as earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, tsunamis, hurricanes, and floods. This class will use an environmental studies approach to examine how modern society exacerbates the damage caused by these natural phenomena and methods to mitigate human suffering. The student will gain an appreciation of humankind’s relationship to the natural environment. This opportunity is open to rising sophomores, juniors, and seniors that have an unweighted cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher and have taken the PERT. (There is no minimum required PERT score for this course.) This course will count as a 0.5 science credit in high school on a weighted GPA scale AND the physical science requirement for a general AA degree at NWFSC.

- Practical Applications of Math (MGF 1006): This course is designed for students requiring only general education mathematics courses (non-STEM related degree). Topics include systematic counting; probability; statistics; history of mathematics; geometry; sets; and logic. This opportunity is open to rising sophomores, juniors, and seniors that have an unweighted cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher; have a PERT math score of 114 or higher; and have taken the PERT reading and writing tests. (There are no minimum required PERT reading and writing scores.) This course is consider “accelerated,” as students will complete one semester of work and it will count as 1.0 math credit in high school on a weighted GPA scale AND one of the two required “core math” requirements for a general AA degree at NWFSC.

* In-person NWFSC course @ WHS
For the Fall 2023 semester, our NWFSC on-campus course will be College Success (SLS 1001). This class will be taught by a WHS teacher. This is a great transitional course from the high school setting to the college environment. It will help develop practical study skills to enhance academic success at both the high school and college levels. College Success focuses on time management; note-taking; test taking skills; creating goals; identifying learning styles; using NWFSC resources; developing career choices; and learning to cope with common issues that many college students face in their first year. This opportunity is open to rising sophomores, juniors, and seniors that have an unweighted cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher and have taken the PERT. (There is no minimum required PERT score for this course.) This course will count as a 0.5 elective credit in high school on a weighted GPA scale AND the general education credit for a general AA degree at NWFSC.
