After collaborating with local and state weather experts, the Walton County School District has made the decision to close schools on both Thursday and Friday, January 23 and 24, due to the after effects of the Winter Storm. The closure includes students and employees, as well as SPICE and extracurricular activities.
The amazing snow fall will begin to melt today, but the precipitation may refreeze leaving ice on the roads for the next two days. This makes driving unsafe for buses on roads and especially bridges. Weekend weather will get above freezing, and we anticipate reopening on Monday, January 27. We will continue to monitor the weather, as safety is always our number one priority.
Stay safe, and continue to stay engaged with your schools and our online platforms for more information. We hope our students enjoy today's record snow fall. It really is an unbelievable sight!

The closure includes students and employees as well as SPICE and extra curricular activities. Walton may begin to see precipitation to include ice on Tuesday afternoon which will make it unsafe for school buses to be on roads and bridges. Wednesday may continue to see freezing temperatures which may keep ice on the roadways. We will continue to monitor the weather, as safety is always our number one priority. At this time, we expect to be back at school on Thursday, January 23. Stay safe, and continue to stay engaged with your schools and our online platforms for more information.

Hayden Arnold competed in the district FFA Discussion Meet contest this morning and placed 3rd! 🎉 The FFA Discussion Meet contest is designed to simulate a committee meeting where discussion and active participation is expected from each member. Participants demonstrate their discussion skills and develop a keen understanding of key agricultural issues through this competition. This was Hayden's first year competing in this competition, and he did an amazing job!

This year's Walton High School Culinary classes stepped up the game and created some very creative and complex designs! Students drew their own patterns, made the dough, and put it all together. So cute!
In Mr. Warren's economics classes, the students participate in Market Day as part of their end-of-year project. They apply all the economic principles they've learned throughout the year by creating a business, understanding supply and demand, and managing personal finances. We'd like to give a shout-out to our hard-working Key Club! They assisted with STEAM Night at Maude Saunders Elementary School, ensuring it was a huge success. Representatives from the Emerald Coast Science Center even commented on how great "the teenagers" were! 😀
Two of our FFA members went to Chipley today to compete in Florida's Sub-District contest.
Chloe Bendure competed in the prepared public speaking contest and placed 3rd! Chloe was tasked with preparing a 6- to 8-minute speech about an issue in agriculture. Her chosen topic was the decline in our bee population. After her speech, Chloe had to answer industry-specific questions from a panel of judges.
David Wilson competed in the safe tractor operations contest. After taking a written exam about tractor safety, David had to drive a pre-set course with a tractor and trailer. He had to hook a trailer up to the tractor, back the tractor and trailer in a straight line, and zig-zag through the course in under 3-1/2 minutes. David did an awesome job on the course today!
We're so proud of Wells Bettenhausen & Kelan Washington for signing their letters of intent this afternoon to play football & further their education at Lenoir-Rhyne University and Mercer University (respectively)! Congratulations, Wells and Kelan!
Congratulations to Adrian Cuica! 🎉 This past week and weekend, he traveled to FSU in Tallahassee to participate in the annual Tri-State Honor Band. Over 400 students from Florida, Georgia, and Alabama were accepted into this prestigious event, and Adrian was one of them! He was also the only student in Walton County to be accepted!
Our agriscience foundations students are wrapping up their soil and plant science unit. They've created their own soil profiles, collected soil samples, tested the pH of their samples, and propagated their own plants. These students are learning about plant processes and the importance of soil & plant health. What they're learning will help them determine which crops they'll grow in the land lab this spring.
We'd like to give a shout-out to Ms. Moody's AP Lit class! Before Thanksgiving break, they played a literary Jenga game. Each Jenga piece was numbered, and there were corresponding questions for each piece. There were 10 questions that had to be answered, in writing, by the table. If someone knocked the tower over, they had to answer the question in writing.
We'd like to give a shout-out to our AMAZING lunchroom staff for making a yummy Thanksgiving lunch today! Complete with turkey, stuffing, green beans, mac & cheese, cranberry sauce, and banana pudding, it was definitely a meal to remember!
Thank you Teresa Burks, Mattie Henry, Karen Maierle, and Akemi Womack for everything you do every day to keep our bellies full and our hearts happy! 💙 And thank you to Susan Brewer and Frances London for chipping in to make sure everything was perfect! 🩷
From quick thinking in Impromptu to strategic speeches in Legislative Debate, these Leadership students showcased their incredible skills and dedication in the world of Speech and Debate last Saturday at Niceville High School. We'd like to congratulate Ean Schofield for taking 1st place in Novice Impromptu and Asher Sawyer for earning 3rd place in Varsity Legislative Debate! Earning top spots in these events requires not only talent but resilience. Impromptu competitors face three intense rounds of on-the-spot speeches, while Legislative Debaters tackle two grueling 2-hour sessions of non-stop strategy and persuasion.
We are so proud of our students who gave it their all and represented Walton High with poise and passion! Go Braves!
